LAST CALL FOR URSIN AND KUBUS

A THEATRICAL CONCERT BY RUEDI HÄUSERMANN

«Music hurts me. I don’t know whether I truly love it. It finds me wherever it happens to. I don’t go looking for it.»
(Robert Walser, Masquerade and Other Stories)

The Kubus Quartet is on the move. They are ready for the stages of the world.

The orchestra manager’s name is Ursin. He’s responsible for communication to the outside world. He’s the one who makes the phone calls, organizing everything, makes plans, rummages for hard-to-obtain items and in general bothers everybody. Yet Ursin is an avid listener and an inspiring critic as well. With great he throws himself into the musical cosmos, growing into it, up to total immersion. This is when the extraordinary tour embarks on its journey.

In «Last Call for Ursin and Kubus», Ruedi Häusermann creates a labyrinth of a play,  partly of his own musical compositions, but also using the worlds of painting, poetry and seemingly commonplace things. Robert Walser’s «Views on music» appear with great clarity out of the mist like mountain peaks emerging out of the fog. The music illuminates Walser’s ideas. Or is it the other way around?

After many productions at renowned operas and theatres in Germany and Switzerland, Swiss composer and director Ruedi Häusermann has created a jewel of intimate theatre. This jewel is at the same time an homage to his long-time artistic companion Herwig Ursin. For the first time Häusermann is working with the Kubus Quartet. Together they continue the process of sound research within his compositions.

Once in a while Ursin and Kubus suddenly have to deal with everyday life on a practical level. Yet the kaleidoscope keeps revolving, the musicians go into a little dance, a song, radiating the emotion of being human. With great care they create their own space for yearning, until they hear the call from the departure hall: «Last call for Ursin and Kubus!»
