OLD WHITE CLOWNS
Sometimes you can find him on the shelf of a china shop as a kitschy porcelain figure: Pierrot, a dreamer from a bygone era. His story is less harmless, however. It is about murder.
Pierrot was created by a foreigner living in France, Jean-Gaspard Deburau. He invented modern pantomime and made it from untalented street acrobat to the "best actor of Paris". He was cheered by the lower classes, admired by the artistic elite, at the same time France was starting a colonial war in Algeria. And then, Deburau struck one of his fans with his cane and killed him.
Emma Murray, Téné Ouelgo and Max Merker play Pierrot. They tell - with words and without - about the visible and invisible structures of power and domination: on stage, in European history and in us.
